While at Sasebo I had accumulated enough points to qualify for discharge. I was sent to Tokyo via train to board the USS Runels (APD 85).  The train stopped at Hiroshima so I had the opportunity to view those ruins.  I was part of the ship's company aboard the Runels not just a passenger.

An APD is a ship with a DE hull that has had the interior altered to transport troops.  We sailed from Tokyo and made R&R stops at Eniwetok, Pearl Harbor, San Diego, and then through the canal and up the East Coast to Philadelphia.
